2019 HHF Maple Season - Week 4

Posted 4/5/2019 1:14pm by The Webb Family.

Greetings from all of us at Harding Hill Farm!

Our sugaring season was in full operation this week, boiling every day and collecting plenty of sap. On Tuesday, we welcomed the Kindergarten and Third Grade classes from Sunapee Schools to learn the ins and outs of maple sugaring. The third grade class actually tapped their own trees at the school this year – so a trip to our sugarhouse added to their curriculum by learning how maple sap is transformed into maple syrup. Tyler provided a tour of the small orchard behind the sugarhouse before diving into the boiling process. They finished the session with a warm syrup sample and their own kid-sized jug to take home.

The sap ran especially well mid-week. On Wednesday, we processed 2,200 gallons of sap to make 51 gallons of syrup. That’s a great day in our books! So far this season, we boiled 17,325 gallons of maple sap and produced 396 gallons of syrup. We should make another 15 by the end of today’s boil. With the continued warm temperatures, we will have plenty of sap to keep the sugarhouse in full operation for the weekend. If you like the Very Dark, Strong Flavor syrup, looks it should get darker as we move through the weekend. Stop by to try a sample - many people love the darker grades for cooking. Looking ahead… with warmer night time temperatures in the forecast next week, we expect the sugaring season will end soon. While we love maple sugaring, it will be nice to move on to green pastures and spring cleanup.

Join us for the LAST open sugarhouse weekend of the maple season - Saturday 10am till 4pm or Sunday 11am till 4pm. Take a tour, try some syrup fresh off the tap and check out all our farm products. We continue to have maple syrup, candy, cream and sugar available for purchase. Don’t forget about our homegrown grass fed beef cuts too! The freezer is stocked with ground beef, chorizo sausage, steaks, and more.

It’s that time of year. We started taking orders for 2019 green firewood. Deliveries begin in April/May depending on when sugaring season wraps up. Get your firewood order in by email or phone call as soon as possible! We sell out every year. Our price for green firewood is $255 per cord.

Can't make it for our last open sugarhouse of the season? We understand. Contact us year-round by email or phone, and we're happy to send you info and put together a maple syrup or beef order. Orders can be picked up by appointment at our farm on Stagecoach Road in Sunapee. Next week I'll pull together a recap of the maple season and share more farm updates as we move into Spring.

Now this is where I remind everyone, that we will see green grass and warm weather VERY soon! I promise.
